Brazil has approximately 496 million hectares of forests, consolidating its position as the country with the second largest forest area in the world. The existence of this natural wealth highlights the Brazilian forestry sector, making it strategic for the country's economy and for international agendas on environmental conservation and combating the adverse effects of climate change. In this context, the publication Brazilian Forests: data and statistics, produced by the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), plays an important role in providing data and information useful for the management, use, and conservation of Brazilian forests.
This publication, with editions released in 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2019, is the result of efforts to compile and make available data and information in the National Forest Information System (SNIF). The SNIF, coordinated by the SFB, is an official source of forest data and information, being responsible for identifying, organizing, processing and disseminating information about Brazil's natural and planted forests.
In this fifth edition, Brazilian Forests: data and statistics has been updated with historical data up to 2024, provided by different sources of information, covering Brazilian forest resources, the area and state of conservation of natural and planted forests, the forest economy and production, the labor market, public policies, and legislation in the sector. In addition, the publication addresses conservation, sustainable management, teaching and research actions, presenting the fundamental concepts of Brazilian forest management, as well as the main fronts of the SFB.
Available in both physical and digital format, and free of charge, the new edition can be accessed by different devices, with responsive content that adapts to the reader's screen. The digital resources developed offer the possibility of exploring each piece of content in greater detail through direct links to the SNIF website and other external sources consulted. In addition, the web application can be saved as a desktop application, ensuring use and access to data on portable devices, whether connected to the internet or not.
The physical version prioritizes accessibility and portability, condensing key information into clear language and simplified visual structure. Throughout the book, icons are presented that indicate the existence of related materials on the internet, and QR Codes are made available that direct the reader to this content (interactive graphics, detailed maps, documents and complementary links) and to the online version.
Combining technological innovation and quality content, Brazilian Forests: data and statistics established itself as a periodical publication by SFB for managers, researchers, and citizens interested in sustainability and the future of our forest resources.
